What is KANSEI engineering?


About JSKE
The Japan Society of Kansei Engineering(JSKE) was established on October 9, 1998. On November 20 and 21th,1999, the 1st annual meeting was held at Bunka women's university. There are currently 1200 members in 2003.

Members are researchers, students, persons engaged in Kansei related business and Enterprise members. They belong to various universities, institutes, companies such as University of Tokyo, Tsukuba University, Chiba University, Shinshu University, Osaka University, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Keio  university, Waseda University, Kogakuin University, Bunka women's college, Ritsumeikan University, Illinois University, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport , Japan Patent Office, Tokyo Metropolitan Government, AIST, KAIST, NTT, Sony, Honda, Hitachi, Matsushita Electric Works, Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, Matsushita Electric Industrial. Toray, Shiseido, Nissan Motor, Mazda, Takenaka Komuten, Shimizu Corp., Canon Inc., Seiko Epson etc.

JSKE has 40 sectional meetings such as "KANSEI philosophy", "Fuudo(climate) technology", "apparel" "KANSEI business", "KANSEI goods", "KANSEI and new product development", "KANSEI design", "KANSEI interaction" etc.

Purpose of establishment
The society was established in order to develop culture and technology taking information society for the 21st century mainly on a KANSEI.We harmonizes with social science, cultural sciences, natural science, technology and skills and works that human can do, and pursue the methods for happiness of universe.

Modern science and technology after Industrial Revolution began to make various products in large quantities. However, as a result there is no personality in life and people may lose the creativeness because uniform industrial product were invented. We are going to challenge "KANSEI engineering" as an attempt escaping from such chaos.

As the present problem, we are studying on development of procedure of quantitative KANSEI measurement, introduction of new methods of analysis such as fluctuation, fuzzy, fractal, complex systems, and research through many area of information engineering / human engineering / cognitive science / psychology / design studies interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary.
Furthermore, we will positively support researches about possibility of industrialization of the result of the theme that are hard to take up with existing engineering and boundary area.

In Science Council of Japan, materials engineering research communication commission KANSEI engineering subcommittee worked, and Ministry of Education scientific research  grant was recognized as time limit branch item "KANSEI engineering" from 1997-1999. And  KANSEI information item was recognized from 2003.

Other than materials engineering research communication commission, we have connections with scientific organizations such as Japanese design society, Japan Society for Fuzzy Theory and intelligent informatics, Society of Fiber Science and Technology,, Japan Ergonomics Research Society, Japanese Psychological Association, Japan Society for Precision Engineering, Information Processing Society of Japan, Architectural Institute of Japan., Japan Society of Civil Engineers, Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan, Inc., Chemical Society of Japan, Society of Polymer Science, Japan, Society of Instrument and Control Engineers, Behaviormetric Society of Japan, City Planning Institute of Japan, Ceramics Society of Japan, Japan Institute of Metals.

In Science Council of Japan, "human and engineering" Committee starts in 1997, and KANSEI engineering technical committee was established in it and is developing active researches.

Activities


Meetings: Annual conference is held. Members have the opportunity to present research. Various meetings for the study are held by sectional meetings. KANSEI engineering seminar about theory and Business are held.

Commendation: JSKE commends creative works of articles and businesses of the field of KANSEI engineering. See About the JSKE prize.

Publishing: Because there are few books on KANSEI engineering currently available, JSKE encourages publishing by member.

Journals:JSKE publishes an English research journal "KANSE Engineering international" quarterly in addition to Japanese journals "KANSEI" and "Journal of Japan Society of Kansei Engineering".

About Kansei Engineering International: ISSN 1345-1928
Kansei Engineering International, or KEI, is published by the authority of the Japan Society of Kansei Engineering(JSKE). Kansei Engineering International accepts articles in the entire fields of Kansei; the human reaction from sensory to mental state, that is, sensitivity, sense, sensibility, feering, esthetics, emotion, affection and intution.
Kansei Engineering International is published quarterly starting from 1999. Over 1,200 copies are printed and distributed worldwide.

How to Join JSKE
If you would like to join JSKE as a member, Please fill out the Application form and send it by E-mail or FAX.

The membership fee: Initial fee 2000 yen. Annual fee of regular member 8,000 yen, student member 3,000 yen including jounals.
After your enrollment was approved in the board of directors, the secretariat send you the bill.
 


About the JSKE prize

The JSKE which aimed at "the new engineering that is based mainly on KANSEI" founded "JSKE prize" from 2001 in order to raise advancement and cognition of KANSEI engineering in general.
JSKE collects candidates of product or service with rich KANSEI recommended by member of JSKE in key words such as KANSEI products, KANSEI society, KANSEI business It is decided and commends by the selection committee including media persons. The prize winner must not be a JSKE member.
