International Journal of Affective Engineering

overcome conventional boundaries

Aims and Scope

The International Journal of Affective Engineering (IJAE) is an open access, peer-reviewed journal that covers the full range of affective engineering or Kansei engineering research, development, and applications. It serves as a platform to communicate, enhance, and promote the study and practice of affective engineering. Affective engineering (AE) aims to overcome conventional boundaries between the humanities, and the social and natural sciences, and fuse a broad range of academic fields.

Supported by the Japan Society of Kansei Engineering, IJAE publishes important Original Articles, Letters, and Review Articles that report original knowledge, data, and perspectives. Articles are published online on a quarterly basis for the journal’s globally diverse audience of researchers, engineers, practitioners, and others.

Manuscript Types

The journal welcomes three types of manuscripts: Original Articles, Letters, and Review Articles. Given the diversity of categories, subjects, and methods in AE, IJAE organizes content into eight categories, which are listed below. All manuscripts are subject to a single-blind peer review.

This is a typical set of categories and we do not rule out mediums. Upon submission, authors must list one or more of the categories below to which their manuscript belongs. If a different category is desired, authors should propose one in the submission form and the editors will consider it.

Original Articles

Original Articles comprise full and comprehensive reports describing original research or other aspects of AE. They should be 6 to 12 pages in length. If your Original Articles exceeds 13 pages, please contact editors in advance.

Letters

Letters are shorter articles in which up-to-date knowledge, examination, or experimental results are concisely described vis-à-vis a subject/issue on AE, and they are worth reporting in a prompt manner. Letters should be 5 pages or less in length.

Review Articles

Review Articles provide a comprehensive summary of research on a certain topic, and a perspective on the state of the art and where it is headed with respect to a subject/issue on AE. Reviews may be widely read by researchers looking for a full introduction to a certain topic. They commonly cite approximately over 50 primary research articles. Review Articles should be 7 to 14 pages in length. If your Review Articles exceed 15 pages, please contact editors in advance.

Categories

Original Articles, Letters, and Review Articles must clearly define the subject or issue being reported, and demonstrate the efficacy of the experiments, arguments, approaches, or otherwise, as relevant to each category.

  • Theories and Models: Articles that proposes novel theories and/or models for AE. The theory and model must be logically derived based on literature reviews and/or experimental data. The significance of the theory and model should be explained and discussed.
  • Methods and Methodologies: Articles that propose novel, effective, and original methods and/or methodologies. The effectiveness of the methods must be logically and/or experimentally demonstrated.
  • Experimental Studies: Articles that report the results of novel experiments designed and conducted to solve a particular problem or analyze the nature of the problem. The effectiveness of the experimental method must be experimentally demonstrated.
  • Practical Solutions: Articles that report novel or improved methods and/or methodologies for solving a particular problem. The effectiveness of the method and/or methodology in solving the problem must be objectively and practically demonstrated.
  • Industrial Applications: Articles that report on system developments from the industry that demonstrate novel methodology and/or developmental processes. The effectiveness of the system and existence of any limitations must be supported by experimental results.
  • Case Studies: Articles that report novel case studies. New viewpoints, approaches, or methods must be created and demonstrably well-designed for a particular case. Case Studies must demonstrate new knowledge or raise important questions.
  • Exploring New Phenomena: Articles that report on phenomena that cannot be ascribed to existing theories, knowledge, experimental results, or hypotheses. Elucidating and/or solving phenomena is expected to contribute toward science, technology, culture, or industry.
  • Proposal of New Research Topics: Articles that pose significant research questions in AE. Proposals must effectively define and formulate the question, its societal implications, and novelty. The importance of addressing the question should be explained and discussed.

Copyright, Open Access and Fees

The journal is fully Open Access for articles submitted from April 8th, 2023 onward and uses Creative Commons (CC) licenses, which allow users to use, reuse, and build upon the material published in the journal without charge or the need for prior permission from the publisher or author. Article processing charge (APC)

There are many costs associated with publishing scholarly journals, such as those of managing peer review, copy editing, typesetting, and online hosting. To cover these costs in the absence of journal subscriptions, authors (or their representatives) are asked to pay page fees.

Page fees

Authors of accepted articles must pay page fees as shown below (plus additional taxes as relevant):

Articles that are 4 journal pages or less: 47,000 Japanese yen
Articles that are 5 to 12 pages: 67,000 Japanese yen

Letters should not be longer than 4 journal pages. Original Article and Review Articles longer than 12 pages must obtain express approval from the Editorial Committee. The additional page charge is 5,000 Japanese yen per page.

* IJAE is managed by ASA (General Incorporated Foundation of Affective Science Association) in cooperation with JSKE (Japan Society of Kansei Engineering). Documents for submission, review, billing and receipt of fees will be sent with ASA and JSKE written together.

Advertising Policy

IJAE does not currently accept advertising.

Waiver policy

Waivers are provided automatically when the corresponding author is from a Group A Research4Life country. In cases of demonstrated financial hardship, the journal will consider a pre-submission application for a waiver from any corresponding author to [editor@jske.org]. Applications cannot be made after the peer review process has begun. The ability of an author to pay the APC does not influence editorial decisions. To avoid any possibility of undue influence, editors involved in the decision-making process for articles are not involved in any deliberations on waivers.
